Words of remembrance for Peter Gottschall.
It has been several months now since I heard the terrible news that Peter has left us. I informed some of his American fans and owners of his guitars, and all were equally shocked and saddened by this news.
I became acquainted with Peter in 2004, when my bassplayer Greg Franklin and I became owners of the beautiful Gottschall guitar, and bass. Peter invited us to play at his booth at the Musikmesse that March, and so began a wonderful adventure. With our scant German and Peter's valiant English, we nonetheless became fast and dear friends. Peter hosted us at his home and took us around beautiful sites including the Neuschwanstein** Castle, and a wonderful spa. He introduced us to many characteristic German foods and excellent beer. (American beer, he assured us, was "S--t"!)
Thus began a fast friendship, and we returned to meet and plan for him at Sarzana and again at the Messe in subsequent years.
It was a pleasure to play his instruments, which were constructed like little jewels, played and sounded beautiful. As a fingerstyle guitarist, I
appreciated their clarity and ease of playing, besides external beauty.
Greg and I had not seen Peter for a few years, but always corresponded at birthdays and Christmas.. he was called my "Onkel Peter" and I his little "Tante".
Peter never received the recognition he deserved for his original engineering and expert craftsmanship. I am proud to own one of his instruments.
I hope he can hear me playing, wherever he is, and may it be that he listens from a place of peace.
Marjorie
