Re: UPDATED:Hurricane Katrina & The Big Easy...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I live in New Orleans, or at least I did until Saturday. I would say that New Orleans as I knew it is probably changed forever.
My wife and I left with our three kids and traveled to Houston on Saturday. We left in a hurry and didn't take anything other than a few days of clothes. No photos, no silver, no guitars, nothing. We of course thought about the chance that things could take some damage, but for some reason (probably the rush to get out before the traffic on the interstate backed up) didn't take any of those material things that we would generally consider to be important to us.
Our house is in the neighborhood next to the 17th Street canal that so famously breached its levee. My house is completely submerged along with the rest of the neighborhood. While reports vary, it seems safe to say that it will be at least 3-4 months before we can even consider going back to the city to survey the damage. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it were much longer than that.
It's a strange feeling knowing that most of your life has been obliterated. Not just the house, but our church, our childrens' schools, our neighborhood, and the city where my wife and I were both born and raised, not to mention the same things for many of our close friends and relatives. I'm extremely fortunate that I work for a large company that will continue to pay me, we have friends and family in Houston to help us out, and we should be able to avoid financial ruin if insurance and FEMA assistance work out. My kids are young and will have only dim memories of this event and the way our lives were before. We have our health and will be able to carry on. Nevertheless, it makes me sad to think of the total loss, and of the devastation of the city I love so much.
Thanks for allowing me to unburden myself. I'll be checking in as time permits.
