Back to the subject at hand.
Here is a partial list of some of the best builders in the world of acoustic steel string guitars (and, towards the end, some shops who specialize in carrying custom builders).

Lots of great links to while away your day looking at gorgeous guitars. You'll find, as with everything else in life, everybody has their favorites....some of whom may build thousands of guitar a year, some of whom build only 10 a year.
I haven't had the chance to play all of these builders....just most of them.
Those that I expected to love based on "forum talk" and general word of mouth often left me wondering what the hype was about. Others that I had never heard of absolutely floored me.
On occasion you will come across a builder you have never heard of only to find out that they have been bulding for 20 or 30 years and are HIGHLY respected by other luthiers....just that they produce so few guitars they haven't developed the "publicity" of other builders. These folks can be a bit of a curse....if you really like their instruments you are often faced with a waiting list in excess of 3 or 4 years (up to 10!!)
If intereseted in a custom guitar try to make it out to a show like Healdsburg Guitar Festival this summer in the Sonoma Valley in California, or the Newport Festival. Many many custom builders come to show their wares....lots to sample (though it can get a bit hard to hear what you are playing).
