Okay people - hold onto your hats! Buyer beware.
I bought this guitar at Guitar Center three days ago. I have a tour coming up and wanted something small and light that will be easy to travel with, and I play a lot of finger style but have never had a guitar that was as well suited as this. I went into GC open to buying anything and left with this guitar pleased and excited. I want to state that I love this guitar, it sounds and plays beautifully, and because I'm a petite female it fits me nicely (doesn't dwarf me like my guild jumbo!). I was also super excited that I had something rare as only 300 of these guitars were made.
When I got home I started researching the guitar and to my surprise there were some things that did not add up in regards to my guitar in comparison to what I was finding online on forums, reviews, etc. Firstly, my guitar did not have a signed white rectangular label but instead had a machine printed orange oval label... hmm curious. Secondly, my guitar had no wooden inlay down the back middle of the back body... hmm curiouser.
So then I start to worry that maybe somehow I had purchased a counterfeit. I call Gibson with the serial number (which they verify), I ask my questions about why my guitar did not match what was represented here on Gibson.com or anywhere else online (besides Guitar Center) and I am told that they will investigate and get back to me.
Here is what I receive as a response from Gibson:
The first run of Keb Mo signatures were signed. Your guitar is after the initial 300 thus no signature and the orange label. After the first 300 the design changed to having no marquetry strip. Do to the popularity of the Keb model, we wanted to continue with the model but contractually needed to make some changes. They are amazing little guitars and sound great.
THERE YOU HAVE IT FOLKS! Gibson has made more than 300 of these guitars and are selling them to consumers with a "Certificate of Authenticity" stating this exact statement "The Keb Mo' Signature Bluesmaster model is a limited edition of 300 guitars". The price however is still roughly $3900 list.I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in Gibson for this. Not for the quality of the instrument - but for their dishonesty.
Soviel zur Gibson Kundenphilosophie......
